For jazz and creative music-making to be accessible, relevant and welcoming for all.

NYJO’s mission is to share our love of jazz and improvised music widely. We do this by:

  • Nurturing emerging professionals and younger musicians with high quality, accessible learning and performance opportunities.
  • Valuing access, process and progress in everything we do; harnessing the power of musical participation as a tool for personal growth.
  • Entertaining audiences with exciting, relevant jazz performances.
  • Enabling young people to enjoy their creativity and realise their musical ambitions.
  • Working collaboratively to bring jazz communities together, in both physical and digital spaces.

Our values

RELEVANT: We aim to produce creative & artistic output that resonates with young musicians, the contemporary jazz scene, and audiences across the country. This keeps our work fresh, engaging, and impactful, allowing us to reach a wide and diverse audience.

BRAVE: Jazz has a rich history of creating social change, challenging norms, and giving a voice to the unheard. Being brave means taking risks, pushing boundaries, and not shying away from challenges. This fearless approach enables jazz to be a catalyst for change.

EMPOWERING: Our role is to give young musicians the tools to express themselves fully. By fostering a supportive environment, we help individuals find their voice, both musically and as people.

NURTURING: We provide opportunities for young people to develop skills and confidence in their creativity in a safe environment where they can thrive. Our nurturing approach to music education ensures young musicians feel supported, valued, and heard.

COLLABORATIVE: In everything we do, we aim to listen to our young musicians, our partners, and audiences around the country. We encourage teamwork, mutual respect, and the sharing of ideas. By working together, we create a dynamic and inclusive atmosphere where creativity flourishes.
