Art Blakey

Art Blakey is a legendary drummer and band leader. His band was renowned as a finishing school for generations of iconic American jazz musicians: from Horace Silver to Wynton Marsalis and beyond his personnel read like a roll-call of the most influential musicians in jazz history. He brought a fresh infusion of African rhythm to his style and this alongside the soulful compositions of his collaborators became the foundations of the Hard Bop style.

Building on an appearance with Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint at Ronnie Scott’s in 2021, NYJO takes Blakey’s music on the road with a sextet of stars-in-the-making. We celebrate this legacy with a programme of classic numbers such as Moaning’, Blues March and One By One that demonstrate the power of this classic repertoire for a contemporary jazz audience.
