Welcome!
Welcome to NYJO’s Network Hub! The NYJO Network seeks to support peer learning and development between music educators around the country who want to explore new ideas and learnings in the field of jazz education.
This Hub has been designed as a place for us to share best practice in the training and professional development of musicians interested in growing their skills as jazz educators. On these pages you will find modular resources for school teachers, example workshop plans, and deep dives into more specific pedagogical approaches. We hope that there is something useful on here for everyone, whatever your current skills or experience!
Educator Resources
At NYJO, we are lucky to work with a brilliant pool of young jazz musicians aged 18 – 25!
These resources have been developed by some of our fabulous musicians, designed to share what they have learnt about the best ways to approach jazz education with your students. From beginner resources to advanced improvisation techniques, we hope that there is something on here for anyone looking to introduce new concepts into their musical teaching.
Educator Training Sessions
In Summer 2024, NYJO hosted a series of educator training sessions for our Emerging Professional musicians. These training sessions were the springboard that allowed our Emerging Professionals to consider how they wanted to grow their own educational practice alongside the NYJO ethos, and we are delighted to now be able to share some of the resources that emerged from these sessions.
Safe Spaces
At NYJO, we are committed to achieving greater fairness, access and opportunity in music education, and to challenging barriers to access where we are able to.
As a result, we are always working to place front-and-centre the principles of equal access and inclusion, and to create ever-more safe and welcoming spaces for young people of all backgrounds and experiences. For us, safe spaces are all about ensuring that everyone feels seen, heard, valued and respected.
Modular Resource Packs
Our modular resource packs are designed as 6-8 weeks worth of session plans and content that you can adapt and work through with your own classes.
Each pack focuses on a specific theme, either musical or social, and supports you to lead sessions with your students that build their musical skills and confidence, whilst also opening up key conversations around topics like gender, mental health, and home.
+You
+You is NYJO’s FREE online learning platform that gives your students the opportunity to play along to music composed by NYJO MDs and Educators.
+You will support them to build their skills whilst playing and improvising alongside NYJO musicians.
Choose which part they want to play, download the chart, press play on the online player and go! Instructional videos, learning resources and suggested listening are all included.
