We are thrilled to announce that our ‘First Time Jazz’ schools tour is back, and this time, we are taking jazz to the young people of London. Following on from the success with this programme in 2023 in North Lincolnshire and in Lancashire and London in 2024, this dynamic first-access schools’ tour is set to inspire young people aged 11-16 to explore jazz as an art form and a means of expression through engaging, interactive performances and workshops.
Access to music education is important to us, particularly at a time when young people are expanding their cultural knowledge and developing their sense of self. We’re excited to bring the magic of jazz to new audiences in the schools of London, sparking a love for music that stays with young people beyond the classroom.
‘First Time Jazz is always such a joyful part of our programme. Being able to bring our musicians to schools across the country, hearing them share their love for this music and passion for their instrument, is so inspiring. We’ve had some really special moments on past tours; from young people dancing on stage with us, getting up to perform their own lyrics, and even full school assemblies doing the macarena to jazz music! I’m so excited to see what the tour brings this time.’

This week, four of our talented NYJO musicians, a group of dynamic young musicians and educators, will be joined by bandleader and Steam Down Collective vocalist Shantéh, to deliver jazz-inspired gigs in London schools identified as needing more access to live music and music education opportunities.
‘Effectively, we’re going into these schools and we’re sharing with young people something that we’re really good at and that we really like. And that’s it. You’re just saying to the audience, ‘I really like this. I hope you like this too’. And I think the genuine joy on our faces when we’re doing this thing that we love, it should ignite that spark in them to go, ‘Oh, they really love that. So do I!’’
Shantéh, First Time Jazz Bandleader
At NYJO, we believe in the power of music – as a form of self-expression, to develop teamwork skills, and for the joy that it brings to players and listeners. We have seen the impact that ‘First Time Jazz’ has on young people, with 56% of young people who took part in this programme in 2023 expressing an interest in learning an instrument following the performances.
We saw first-hand how captivated the students were by the energy and creativity of jazz, and teachers reported increased enthusiasm for jazz among their pupils. This year, we aim to build on that momentum, reaching even more schools, removing barriers to music education and laying the foundations for a more diverse and inclusive UK Jazz scene in years to come.
Our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity ensures that every school, regardless of its location or resources, can participate in this enriching experience. We look forward to taking this inspiring tour on the road, to help us make this month a memorable and inspiring one for young musicians across London.
Stay tuned for updates and stories from the road on our socials as we embark on this exciting journey together!
