In 2026, NYJO are leading a series of workshops with B:Music’s Beginner and Intermediate Jazz Ensembles for 11-19 year-olds. These workshops, led by NYJO Emerging Professional musicians, will allow young people to become the support sets for our Masada gig at B:Music in March with Sam Eastmond!
For almost three decades, John Zorn’s epic Masada project has redefined the concept of Radical Jewish music, with its tight punchy horn lines, relentlessly driving rhythm section, soaring solos, and punk energy! Through the development of this music, Zorn celebrates a Jewish identity that is cultural, diasporic and independent.
These sessions will use the music of Masada as a starting point to explore identity with the young people that we are working with; if Masada spoke to what Zorn wanted to say to the world, then what, in turn, do they want to say about who they are and where they come from? Using the musical building blocks that Masada gives us, the young people that we are working with in Birmingham will have the chance to explore this for themselves.
This project, delivered in partnership with B:Music, is for young people who take part in their existing jazz ensembles. If you are interested in finding out more about their offer and getting involved, please contact them directly.
