NYJO Presents: Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool

September 14, 2024
7:30 pm

Released in 1957, Miles DavisBirth of the Cool marked one of the most significant stylistic shifts in jazz and improvised music since bebop, influencing virtually everything produced under the genre’s umbrella ever since. It was so ahead of its time that it would remain a series of loose and underappreciated rehearsal recordings for almost a decade, until Capitol Records reissued them as a single EP at the tail end of the 50s. The unusual instrumentation – deviating from the typical but impractical big band set up to a 9-piece ensemble composed of Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba, Alto and Bari Sax, Piano, Bass and Drums –  allowed Davis to steer away from the rigid complexity of bebop to create a new signature sound, which felt freer, more flexible; thus birthing cool.

In NYJO Presents: Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool, nine Emerging Professional musicians (aged 18-25) take on the challenge of playing Davis’ pivotal album, at a time when jazz is undergoing yet another period of renaissance.

Just as Birth of the Cool was Davis’ debut as a bandleader, this project will be an opportunity for NYJO musician Noah Ojumu (Drums) to take the reins in leading this ensemble from within. Noah and the band will be working closely with a mentor who will support them throughout the project, helping them develop their musicianship, ready to apply those skills on the road as we bring the programme to audiences around the country.

We invite you to join us for an evening of jazz, as these talented young musicians pay tribute to and celebrate the world’s most acclaimed Trumpeter.

“It’s hard to just learn this music in the practice room but being immersed in the music at NYJO is a great environment to really push my playing. ”

Georgia Ayew, NYJO Emerging Professional (Drums)

Sam Eastmond (MD quote)

"Giving them space to create whatever they wanted, without setting parameters of idiom or style helped them to conceptualise how they could bring these new concepts into their work without scaring them off, or mystifying the process."

Sam Eastmond, NYJO Educator

Jazzwise quote

"NYJO has never been conformist, never hewing to one particular line, never known for fawning replications and very deliberately these days a vehicle for new possibilities."

Anna (Learning national quote)

"[The NYJO residential in Cumbria] helped me to make friends with other young musicians. I enjoy playing a lot more and I’m quite proud of what I’ve accomplished. I feel more confident now. I have learnt different ways of coming up with solid melodies and also a little bit on harmonies. I think it’s been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had."
